Summary The main goal of the proposed study is to design and develop a miniature acoustic direction finding (DF) MEMS that mimics the unique hearing mechanism of the parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea. The fly appears to analyze the superposition of the two natural oscillation modes (rocking and bending) to identify the incident direction of the cricket chirp, thus allowing to accurately determine the direction of acoustic wavelengths that are longer than the separation of fly's sound sensing organs. The current detection systems developed at NPS group based on fly’s hearing system requires two sensors to uniquely determine the direction since only one mode is utilized. In this research, the potential use of a single sensor by coupling the rocking and bending modes will be explored.
