Summary The goals of this work are multi-faceted, consistent with the various efforts covered by this planning letter. In all cases, however, the focus will be on the study of the effects of three-dimensional (3-D) environmental variability on the flow of energy in the acoustic field. The overall goal will then be to improve our understanding of the significance of 3-D propagation effects and quantify their relative importance in areas of interest. Particular focus will be placed on propagation in littoral regions (e.g., continental shelf), and how well we can predict the intensity and signal variability due to remote sources.
