Summary Organizational resilience though is about the social and organizational factors necessary to enable resilience for the organizational unit. We are most interested in what accounts for resilience at the group or organizational unit level of analysis. Simultaneous to building individual resilience, organizations ought to develop and foster resilience in groups, departments, teams, and organizational units. In turn, we believe that resilient units can mitigate challenges and stress individuals experience during and post deployment. The recent meeting chaired by the OSC Coordinator in April 2011 identified organizational resilience as vitally important to responding to stress. In 2010, we developed a set of measures based on prior
research. The measures drawn from the stress literature, organizational learning research, and research on hardiness and resilience represent an important contribution not only for organizational scholars, but also for developing programs to deal with the effects of war on service men and women and their units.
We now propose to take this research to the next level by examining organizational unit resilience in the Navy and validating the measures of unit level resilience. We want to know how relationship quality within units contributes to resilience and whether resilience predicts engagement, commitment, and mission accomplishment. The quality of relationships among unit members can determine whether and how the unit will deal with setbacks and challenges. Secondly, positive assessments of resilience should be associated with how sailors' engagement, commitment, and overall performance (i.e., mission accomplishment).
