Summary	Abusive traffic abounds on the Internet, in the form of email, phishing, malware, denial-of-service, CAPTCHA solvers, and other, yet-to-be imagined exploits. Such traffic is frequently enabled by botnets, distributed collections of compromised hosts operating under common control, typically for nefarious purposes. Modern botnets are increasingly sophisticated, and economically and politically motivated. Despite years of commercial and research efforts, botnets continue to impart both direct and indirect damage upon users, service providers, and the Internet at large. This proposal advocates a unique approach to detecting bots, botnet infrastructure, and mitigating abusive traffic both at the edge and within the network core via transport-level (e.g. TCP) traffic signal analysis.
