Summary Big data is opening up new opportunities for organizations to gain insight and make intelligent inferences from huge volumes of data in real time and across multiple relational and non relational data types. The architectures for realizing these opportunities are based on relatively less expensive and heterogeneous infrastructures than the traditional monolithic and hugely expensive options that exist currently. Selecting the right architecture is the crucial to harnessing the power of big data. However, heterogeneity brings with it multiple options for solving the same problem, as well as the need to evaluate trade-offs and validate the “fitness-for-purpose” of the solution.
The objective of this research is to develop a comprehensive end-to-end application architecture required to realize a big data solution for the Navy Manpower, Personnel, Training, and Education (MPTE) Command. This solution will cover not only a Big Data platform, but also data sources identification, ingestion, analytics and visualization issues to ensure that all essential architecture components required to analyze all aspects of the big data set are in place.
