Summary | The detection of colder objects, such as debris or intentionally quiescent man-made satellites, in space, requires the use of sensors operating at longer wavelengths than infrared (IR). The long wavelength terahertz (THz) region of the spectrum has not been utilized in reconnaissance or surveillance applications due to the lack of sensitive detectors. Recently, we have demonstrated THz imaging and the ability to enhance THz detection using metamaterials and microelectromechanical devices (MEMS). However, the integration of the developed sensors into a flight prototype is still somehow challenging due to movable pixels and bulky readout optics. In this context, the objective of the proposed research is to develop a THz to IR converter FPA, which takes advantage of the already gained know-how on microfabrication processes and significantly simplifies the acquisition of images. The FPA will be optimized for integration with an IR camera to provide a complete imaging system. For space applications, this technology will provide low power consumption, lightweight, and low cost, in contrast with the current THz imagers. Successful completion of this effort will lead to a highly sensitive, albeit simple imaging system that can have a tremendous impact in the ways to detect and image THz in contemporary space applications. |
