Summary | The current proposal for FY06 covers the second year of a multi-year research effort at NPS sponsored by the SSP. The goal is to continue the development started in FY05 of the basic numerical simulation capability to predict the essential fluid dynamic characteristics associated with an underwater missile launch. A suitable off-the-shelf commercial CFD package was identified in FY05 and will continue to be used for the simulation and the results validated against existing flight and numerical data. The long-term multi-year objective is to increase the sophistication and complexity of the numerical simulation and incorporate new features such as shallow water launch characteristics as well as future generation missile technology. The ultimate goal is to develop a reliable predictive tool that could be used in conjunction with real live fire testing and flight data. The work will be carried out in collaboration with the Lockheed Martin Co in Sunnyvale, California who will provide NPS with necessary data and specifications. The progress report for FY05 was presented at SSP in Oct 05 - the follow-on objectives FY06 as agreed upon in that meeting are outlined in this proposal. The work will involve NPS faculty and US Naval Officer graduate student to develop an in-house base of knowledge and expertise in missile launch technology. |
