Summary The Naval Postgraduate School is presently involved in the development of a Morphing Micro Air-Land Vehicle (MMALV). The goal of the program is to develop a man-portable vehicle that is capable of both aerial and terrestrial locomotion to maximize surveillance and intelligence gathering operations. Current specifications call for the vehicle to: 1) be able to fly over a mile to a target zone, 2) upon landing, morph into terrestrial vehicle to increase stability, mobility, and stealth, 3) be capable of terrestrial locomotion around a target area to maximize surveillance/reconnaissance, and 4) provide visual, auditory, and chemical sensing to locate hostile entities and installations in a time critical manner. A 12" wingspan prototype has been developed that is capable of flying and crawling locomotion, a feat which no existing man-portable vehicle can presently match. Future work includes development of a control system for autonomous operation, and development of a networked communications system for intelligence transfer within the context of network centric operations.
