Back Relationship Between Morphology and Hydrodynamics Below Arctic Sea Ice in the Vicinity of a Pressure Ridge Keel

Summary The proposed project is a small scale field study of the boundary layer flow under Arctic sea ice, particularly in the vicinity of a pressure ridge keel. The observations will provide new insights into drag relationships that can be applied in models of the combined air-ice-ocean Arctic system. This is a timely topic of research, as the reduced Arctic pack ice is expected to become more mobile than it was in previous decades, since the ice age and ice ridge structure are changing with time over much of the central Arctic Basin. This proposal will support the participation of two NPS MS Navy students in the Arctic Submarine Laboratory's ICEX2011 field camp in the Beaufort Sea in March 2011. The field work will generate the data sets for the two MS thesis projects.
