Summary This project focuses on unmanned surface vehicle employment for anti-submarine warfare and strike group protection in the context of "Maritime Shield" and "Protected Passage". The mathematical models and analysis in the 2014 study on ASW USV Employment will be extended with operational formations of USV swarms, refined speed, energy and communication requirements, and validated via computer simulation. The circular search analysis for Maritime Shield will be extended to a practical oval pattern. The Protected Passage analysis will be augmented with scenarios in which USVs deploy and retrieve reusable sonobuoys. Previous results indicate that coping with strike group motion is a central issue for Protected Passage, and that augmenting USVs with stationary sonobuoys is a promising approach for reducing maximum required USV speed. USV speed is a limiting factor due to sea state constraints and increased energy consumption at high speeds. Preliminary risk analysis indicates that solutions involving large numbers of small inexpensive USVS are likely to be most effective with minimized cost. Proposed work will leverage previously developed requirements, system, and context models for ASW USVs. Validated models will be used for USV ASW CONOPS development.
