Summary The Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest federal employer of scientists and engineers and its research and development enterprise directly and indirectly influences economic growth in communities near military, laboratory, or other DoD facilities. As the demand for highly skilled science and technical workers continues to grow, sustaining DoD operations and local economic growth depends on a diverse Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) talent pool. These realities underscore the Department's need to invest in K-12 informal education and outreach. Competence in science and mathematics, including awareness of engineering careers, gained in grades K-12 form the foundation of an educated, capable, and technical future workforce needed by DoD for national security. Naval STEM Mission: Ensure that the right resources and that the values of the Department of the Navy are focused so that the best and brightest students, scientists, engineers, and veterans of all ages, of all types of diversity, and of all stages of life are aware of the unique naval science and engineering opportunities available to them. As the nation's premier national security research university, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) produces highly-qualified graduates in disciplines critical to ensure our country's security and superiority. NPS students and faculty have a rich history of reaching outside the gates to engage and inspire local youth interested in STEM, with the hope of nurturing the next generation of engineers, research scientists, mathematicians and computer scientists that will fulfill our nation's promise. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) provides operational support for formal and informal K-12 STEM outreach opportunities.
