Back Design and Development of a Shipboard Opportunistic Array

Summary In Phase 1 of this research, various aspects of a new antenna concept, referred to as an "opportunistic array," were investigated. An opportunistic array is an integrated ship-wide digital phased array, where elements are placed at available open areas over the entire length of the ship. The elements are self-standing transmit/receive (T/R) modules in that they have no hardwire connections other than prime power. Synchronization signals, beam control data, and digitized radar signals are passed wirelessly between the elements and a central signal processor below deck. Phase 1 examined some fundamental design tradeoffs and enabling technologies, and results have validated the opportunistic array concept. Phase 2 continues to look at the integration of new technologies and techniques into the opportunistic array concept, and proposes that a small demonstration array be constructed.
