Summary This proposal is to OSD Rapid Reaction Technology Office, for Government Oversight and Transition for the Orthos Project. Orthos is a Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL) effort to develop customizable, concealable field-sets that can communicate position, brief messages, or code words to multiple, multi-purpose cross-connected receiver platforms, in challenging threat and/or degraded communications environments. Naval Special Warfare Group 10 has indicated interest in this technology, along with the Marines Special Operations Command (MARSOC) and the Office of Special Warfare of US Army Special Operations Command (USASOC).
Orthos combines two state of the art capabilities: advanced tagging, tracking, locating (TTL), as well as advanced low-profile communications (LPC) using a waveform transmitted by a field-set located on a target of interest. This signal can be received, detected and processed by software defined radios (SDRs) on a multitude of platforms. The transmitted signal can be used for both single-platform Doppler-based geolocation and the transmission of low data-rate communications (brevity codes, short messages, Global Positioning System (GPS) position exfiltration, motion state exfiltration, etc.).
