Summary A series of at-sea experiments were methodically carried out in 2012, 2013 and 2014 to obtain a comprehensive dataset that would allow for the characterizations of the scales, distribution, geoacoustic properties, and impacts on acoustic propagation of the very large subaqueous sand dunes discovered on the upper slope of the northeastern South China Sea. A follow-on three-year effort to thoroughly process and analyze the data and to document the scientific results and findings is proposed here.
