Summary Satellite observations are critical in order to understand the influence global sources of aerosol have on air quality, visibility and health. As a result, the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) proposes a project in which Satellite-borne remote sensors are thoroughly tested and validated by comparison with in-situ measurement before their costly deployment. NPS and Caltech scientists are prepared to team up with NASA/JPL scientists to validate multi-species, multi-angular polarimetric sensor, developed at JPL. NPS provides meteorological sensors and instruments that characterize the in-situ physical and optical properties of the lower atmosphere. Caltech scientists bring aboard sensors for in-situ characterization of the chemical properties of the aerosol. The in-situ instruments will be flown aboard CIRPAS Twin Otter research aircraft. The JPS remote sensor aboard NASA's high altitude ER-2 will simultaneously overfly the study area.
