Back Microscale physics of impact into dense suspensions

Summary Dense suspensions, consisting of sub-millimeter particles in a Newtonian fluid, will solidify in response to impact. The microscale mechanisms that lead to this response are not well understood. A complete particle scale description is necessary to fully exploit these materials in, e.g., armor, collapse mitigation, or soft robotics applications. Using high-speed imaging, image processing, optical techniques, and particle-based simulations, this work will improve our understanding of why these materials stiffen upon impulsive loading and how to engineer them for improved functionality.
