Summary The Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Vessel (ACTUV) is a 130 foot totally autonomous and unmanned surface vessel designed to track and trail submarines. This platform, designed and developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is a prototype intended to begin sea trials in 2016. While the support of ASW was the original intent for the ACTUV, DARPA and Office of Naval Research (ONR) are interested in the possibility of other operational applications for this autonomous system. Our plan is to use Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to develop and examine concepts of operation for the ACTUV in one, or more, pertinent naval missions, to include surface warfare (SUW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and mine/counter mine warfare (MIW). Our focus is to determine potential tradespace considerations for the ACTUV, by assessing operational effectiveness of the ACTUV for a particular mission, while determining important design considerations in the ACTUV that contribute most to that operational success.
