Summary Recent Mine Warfare (MIW) studies have focused on comparing legacy and near future systems (Littoral Combat Ship (LCS)), various autonomous unmanned mine detection systems, and a collection of mine neutralization systems (study sponsored by NRP for FY 16) launched from various ship platforms. The focus of each study was on operational effectiveness in MIW missions, with the intent of gaining insight regarding performance parameters, or tactics, which provided the most operational benefit at the least cost. We leveraged the benefits of experimental design and simulation in our studies, while bounding the problem by studying strictly deep water mines. We will now expand our application of MBSE to MIW through the examination of an aspect of the projected future global maritime mining threat. Our plan is to determine the associated system requirements, capabilities and priorities for development and/or sustainment of the US Navy's MIW capabilities in the 2040 time frame. Our study will consider capabilities across all warfare domains (space, air, surface, subsurface), multi-tasking/multi-use of vehicles/platforms (manned or unmanned) across warfare areas, and interoperability with joint/allied force capabilities. Our work leverages three recent studies that compared current legacy to potential future MIW systems, particularly LCS, with focus on operational effectiveness in MIW missions. The third of these studies is ongoing and will be completed in December 2016.
