Summary The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) will host approximately 100 interns this summer for 8 to 10 weeks. The interns will work alongside NPS world-class researchers, military officers and civilian experts on naval relevant research. Typically these students possess high academic performance, however the internship opportunity is often the first time they have been exposed to an academic, military environment in a professional setting.
Experiential learning alongside a research mentor, military graduate students, and civilian laboratory teammates provides necessary experience to move these young people to discover whether the research experience is what they want to pursue for their career. The value of internships for these students is understanding how their classroom knowledge and social skills fit in a real-world research realm. By positively engaging and supporting growth, NPS will begin the professional development of these young people.
Tied to their research laboratory work, these students need additional exposure to skills necessary for research and understanding the makeup of the workforce to ensure their success. The focus at NPS will be their professional development activities, both necessary for a successful and critical thinking future naval workforce. Over the 8 to 10 week period students will work on scientific writing and the synthesis of research. Additionally, students will provide composition on the current workforce with related issues such as diversity and women in the workforce. Ultimately, the goal of the professional development work for these students is to prepare them and make them selectable for DoD and naval workforce opportunities.
