Sponsor Office of Naval Research (Navy)
Summary This project will focus on applications of power electronic systems to achieve the Navy objective of reduced electrical energy consumption and improved energy management. Particularly power converters as Energy Management Systems (EMS) will be modeled and prototyped in order to quantify how their use can contribute to the Navy needs for electrical energy. Aspects of electrical management include:
Power Metering
Peak Power Control
Active and reactive power flow
Load, source and storage management
Power quality, reliability and fault management
Another objective is to use the results of this project to support the power and energy track curriculum being developed in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department. Students will be able to contribute to the proposed research through their thesis work while learning about the application of power electronics to energy efficiency and energy management.
