Summary The Arctic environment is changing and has become significantly different from what was studied in the 1970’s and 1980’s. These changes directly impact ocean acoustic propagation characteristics. To facilitate an understanding of the sound propagation physics, a small 5-day acoustic field experiment will be conducted in conjunction with the Arctic Submarine Laboratory’s ICEX-2018, with a focus on the dynamical and acoustical characteristics of the highly variable interface between the Polar Mixed Layer (PML) and the Pacific Summer Water (PSW) at ~ 50 m water depth. Analysis and modeling of the data collected during the experiment will explore the physical mechanisms controlling the variability and structure in the water column and acoustic signals. Understanding this new environment and the physical processes at work will allow us to identify the acoustically-relevant environmental factors which are critical to safe and successful operation in the Arctic.
Equipment purchase explanation (as required in section above): Equipment purchases anticipated for this work will involve standard oceanographic, computer and lab equipment that will be handled within the context of this project and by existing personnel. No additional or special long-term maintenance requirements are anticipated.
