Summary A series of studies at the Naval Postgraduate School has demonstrated that fatigue due to sleep deprivation and circadian misalignment plays an important role in the performance and morale of US Navy crews. In addition, analysis of Defense Equal Opportunity Climate Survey - DEOCS - data indicates a strong negative correlation between amount of sleep and perceived stress levels which may erode resilience over time. This project will determine if there is a relationship between individual resilience (as measured by the Servicemember Evaluation Tool - SET), the work and rest schedules of Sailors during underway operations and the collective resilience (i.e., sum total of the SETs) for the command. Data to be collected include the SET, sleep and work schedules, and other occupational stressors at the beginning, mid-point, and end of underway deployments on multiple US Navy ships. We will attempt to recruit ships with similar mission profiles based on their planned operations and the watchstanding schedules that they are using.
