Summary | The Synthetic Theater Operations Research Model (STORM) is used by the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps to evaluate campaign risk, explore operational plans, and assess the value of potential operational and acquisition decisions. STORM is a large, campaign-level simulation that requires extensive inputs for both system parameters and operational concepts. Analysts are interested in numerous, time-varying campaign-level metrics that serve as indicators of success, as well as system-level and mission-level measures that affect them. Consequently, a single STORM run usually generates a massive amount of output data, potentially gigabytes per replication, where multiple replications are required because STORM is a stochastic simulation. The resulting output must then be post-processed, analyzed, and turned into information for decision makers. STORMMiner is a post-processor previously developed at the Naval Postgraduate School for Navy-centric analyses. In this effort, we will adapt STORMMiner for Marine Corps use. Our goals are: (i) to increase the quantity, quality, and timeliness of insights from STORM runs in a new analytic context, and (ii) to use STORM-generated attrition data to support a current study to estimate Combat Active Replacement Factors for principle end items in a high intensity conflict between the U.S. and a near-peer competitor. |
