This research continues the DoD Systems Engineering Research Center (SERC) System Qualities Ontology, Tradespace and Affordability (SQOTA) Project, now Research Topic 181 (RT-181). This Phase 6 research includes collaboration with AFIT for system architecture modeling and cost estimation of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission variations involving heterogeneous teams of autonomous and cooperative Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) agents. NPS will provide cost modeling expertise, modeling tools, and analysis support. A focus will be on translations between models/tools in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), specifically mapping architectural elements into cost model inputs to support automated costing.
Measures of Effectiveness (MOEs) will be established, uncertainty associated with the adversary and the environment will be characterized and modeled, and system parameters will be chosen to demonstrate the ability to perform trade space analysis in a meaningful way. We will perform deeper dives on the mission costs, striving for automation from the MBSE modeling approaches. This will enable more robust, complete and integrated tradespace analyses including affordability.
Research in basic cost modeling will cover model definition, data collection and calibration for the COSYSMO 3.0 systems engineering cost model and a major-system version of the COCOMO III software cost model; and continue MBSE tool integration. Extensions of the cost models will be developed and furthering of SySML integration to address Total Ownership Cost. We will investigate improvements for different MBSE modeling methods and tools including SysML, DoDAF and Monterey Phoenix to better integrate with costing.
