Summary | As the arctic zone becomes of greater tactical importance, the U.S. Navy plans to expand its operational footprint into these areas. However, most Navy vessels are not currently designed for operation in the arctic zone with its unique conditions such as ice floes, cold weather, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to assess the operational impacts and prepare Navy vessels for safe navigation through this environment. This research will assess the unique challenges and limitations of effective performance of surface ships and craft in the arctic and identify current and future technologies to address the issues. Recommendations will be given for the proper preparation of these vessels for reliable and successful operations in the arctic zone. |
