Summary | Based on the 2018 Digital Engineering (DE) Strategy released by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (USD(R&E)) there is an opportunity for coordinated parallel research efforts conducted at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Carderock Division Center for Innovation in Ship Design (CISD). Broadly, the DE Strategy is focused on utilization of models to inform decision making based on a single source of authoritative truth, facilitating integration of new technologies and improvement to coordination and communication across stakeholders and engineers. In support of those objectives, this research proposes a coordination of thesis research from NPS and design work at NSWC Carderock CISD. Specifically, CISD is conducting research design projects focused on definition of design of a Next Generation MCM Vessel. To expand that design and to demonstrate the utility of DE as an integrating mechanism, this research will utilize the ship design experience and expertise of CISD engineers and the operational experience of NPS students to conduct innovative early stage design projects that examine both the operational and design considerations for the Next Generation MCM Vessel. The operational modeling conducted at NPS will focus on the full spectrum of MCM operations, to include mapping, surveying, ISR, and the detect-to-engage MCM kill chain. In accordance with the DE concept, that operational modeling will be conducted simultaneously with an expanded design effort led by CISD engineers, with an emphasis on a shared starting point and problem set. This will result in a more focused final design, where the operational experience of the NPS students informs the design effort of CISD engineers and the design experience of the CISD engineers informs the operational modeling of the NPS students. |
