Summary | This study is designed to incorporate physical and cognitive fatigue estimates into manning and workload models of USN shipboard operations. This project will first conduct a comprehensive review of the literature regarding the connections among physical fitness levels, health (and its converse, illness), obesity, shiftwork, and sleep. A pre-study questionnaire has been designed to assess the prevalence of physical injuries/physical complaints and fatigue among USN crewmembers. These surveys will be administered in conjunction with the Naval PRT on board an operational Naval vessel to determine a point prevalence estimate of physical fitness, physical injuries and fatigue issues in the fleet. From the information collected in these surveys, we will build a comprehensive model of operational readiness for current and proposed Naval environments such as LCS and DOG-I 000 based on the job task analyses. In latter stages of the study, physical therapy outcome, PRT scores, stress, and resilience of USN Sailors will be collected and compared, showing averages and standard deviations along with their work/rest schedules. Our initial operational readiness model will then be updated to include adjustable manning levels and work/rest schedules based on the results of the data collected. |
