Back Modeling and Simulation of Naval Directed Energy Weapon Engagements

Summary As the Navy rapidly moves forward to develop and deploy directed energy weapons (DEWs), there is an urgent need for realistic modeling and simulation of DEW engagements. Large simulation exercises (SIMEXs) help fulfill some of this need, but they tend to entail significant cost and time, and they lack the flexibility to study a large variety of environments and battlefield scenarios. We propose to create new, flexible modeling tools to simulate DEW engagements at the Naval Postgraduate School, leveraging in-house expertise and the naval experience of our student officers. This will be a multi-year, inter-departmental effort, incorporating atmospheric models and databases provided by the Meteorology Department, high energy laser (HEL) performance and propagation models supplied by the Physics Department, kill-chain models, threat scenarios, and tactical decision aids developed by the Systems Engineering Department, and war-gaming and visualization tools developed by the Modeling, Virtual Environments and Simulation (MOVES) Institute.
