Summary Navy commands and units not only provide camaraderie and sense of purpose, but they offer a context wherein sailors and marines find meaning, make sense of trauma, and relate to those who have experienced the same challenges or successes. Building resilience in the Navy (particularly at the command level) is a key to developing stronger, more resilient and ready force. Resilience is a critical capacity in a world where serious challenges threaten to immobilize and disrupt individuals and organizations. In particular, Navy commands at home or deployed face a multitude of stressors and risks which require strength and fortitude to remain intact. One of the key elements in Navy Operational Stress Control (OSC) has been individual resilience to mitigate significant stressors. Individual resilience speaks to the psychological and emotional strength to bounce back from difficult circumstances. This research continues work on organizational resilience. Organizational resilience places emphasis on social and organizational factors necessary to enable resilience. We are most interested in what accounts for resilience at the group or organizational unit level of analysis. We believe that resilient Navy Commands can mitigate challenges and stress individuals experience during and post deployment. The OSC research meeting chaired by the OSC Coordinator in May 2012 identified organizational resilience as vitally important to responding to stress.
