Summary Naval aviation readiness is a critical issue in DoD since the lack of readiness can lead to mission failure. Decision makers are faced with two seemingly contradictory issues: not enough information but also sometimes too much information. The lack of information in Naval aviation maintenance information systems makes it difficult for program offices to get feedback from civilian and depot overhaul of broken components--feedback that would further their understanding of the component failures and to make any needed systemic change. Too much information results when the existing technology and methods cannot process the data quick enough for the decision maker.
Our goal: Develop a common standard data repository or datamart for relevant maintenance repair data for data driven analytics and machine learning tools to improve aviation maintenance readiness through better resource management. Alternatively, we can leverage NAVAIR¿s Standard Data Repository (SDR) by extracting the needed data and augmenting with other data sources. Currently, gathering data from across the fleet is laborious for root cause analysis on trending failures. It is often difficult for the program offices to get feedback from civilian and depot overhaul of broken components--feedback that would further their understanding of the component failures. Furthermore, the root cause could be human capital related. In addition, we want to identify non-traditional metrics that could improve maintenance aviation performance (Moneyball concept).
