Summary The radar observations have the characteristics of high spatial resolution and rapid update rate which are capable of resolving storm structures on fine spatial and time scales and capturing storm evolutions timely. However, the radar observed data are generally in the form of reflectivity and radial velocity, which cannot be incorporated directly into a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. Therefore, retrieval procedures are required to assimilate radar data into an NWP.
