Back Exploiting Advanced Environmental Intelligence to Optimize the Effectiveness of Missions Involving Persistent Surveillance Monitoring of Known Threats

Summary In this project, we are investigating, designing, testing, and developing methods to: (a) better exploit environmental intelligence; and (b) provide increased information superiority and capabilities to NRO. In the second year of this research project, we will continue to address three NRO key functional capabilities: (1) persistent surveillance; (2) monitoring known threats; and (3) detecting RF sources. Our main objective in year two will be to conduct analyses, model development, and model experiments related to cloud forecasts used by NRO. The results of this work will be used to begin designing decision aids for use by NRO planners and analysts (for example, decision aids that improve the use of cloud forecasts in mission planning and post-mission analysis). Our main tasks in the second year will be based on our results from our first year and will include: (a) quantitatively assessing the performance of the cloud forecasts used in mission planning; (b) quantitatively assessing the impacts of forecasted and observed clouds on mission planning and outcomes; and (c) designing improved quantitative decision aids for using cloud forecasts in mission planning and analysis. These topics will be addressed by season and lead time for key regions of the globe. The net result of this project will be improved mission planning and geospatial intelligence collection and analysis based on advanced environmental intelligence. The year two deliverables will be: (1) a report summarizing our analyses; and (2) initial decision aids for mission planners and analysts.
