Summary | The office of Naval Research (ONR) has sponsored a major project that has established the massive multiplayer online wargame leveraging the internet (MMOWGLI) project. The open-source web-based software is developed at NPS and operates on NPS infrastructure supporting any user's web browser. MMOWGLI utilizes social networking-technologies for rapid user-driven exploration of key questions through idea brainstorming, which then leads to focused action-plan generation. Multiple games have been run to perform innovative group analysis and collaboration on scenarios of interest to the Navy and other sponsors. NPS uses multiple proven low-cost, open-standards, open-source capabilities in concert, anticipating even broader use and development by a proposed community of stakeholder sponsors. ONR sponsorship supports "fixed cost" expenses of infrastructure configuration, software maintenance, and essential sharable capabilities for game administration. Multiple individual games are being separately run for additional sponsors who underwrite "variable costs" for the configuration, conduct and analysis of each game of interest. Continued work is needed to demonstrate greater reliability and scalability to larger numbers of active participants. Multiple NPS graduate-student thesis also support this unique opportunity to produce a major new capability for large-scale team-play training, tactical alternatives development, war gaming and after-action analysis. |
