Summary The US Army is concerned about the effects of step-changes in airplane weight on wind and turbulence behind the aircraft. This is associated with air-drops of heavy packages from the Army's C-17 aircraft. Army scientists have developed analytical and prognostic models to estimate these changes, but are in need of in-situ data to evaluate and validate the models.
CIRPAS will deploy its Twin Otter Research airplane to Yuma Arizona to measure winds and turbulence behind a C-17 before and after an air-drop. The Twin Otter will be instrumented with its radome gust probe, and with the Twin Otter Doppler Wind LiDAR (TODWL). The CIRPAS team will be deployed twice to Yuma, for two-week periods in spring and fall 2014.
