Back Field-Based Residual Stress Measurements for Predicting Stress Corrosion Cracking

Summary This proposal is for funding to determine the feasibility of performing x-ray diffraction-based measurements of residual stress aboard naval vessels. We will use the laboratory x-ray diffractometer at the Naval Postgraduate School to measure residual stresses in welded AA5456 and AA5083 plate material. These residual stress measurements will be combined with stress corrosion cracking measurements to evaluate the potential of this approach for predicting and mitigating stress corrosion cracking of sensitized marine aluminum plate. We will quantify the sensitivity of the x-ray residual stress approach and will characterize the potential difficulties from crystallographic texture, displacement errors, and multiple phases.
