Summary | We propose to collaborate with NPS CIRPAS for a study focusing on characterizing the effects of atmospheric turbulence and aerosols on electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) systems. We plan to deploy the CIRPAS Twin Otter over the marine atmospheric boundary layer offshore of central California to make concurrent measurements of the atmosphere and take images of targets with and IR imagery system. The Twin Otter is fully equipped for measuring atmospheric aerosols and optical turbulence near the surface and above. We plan to utilize a FLIR camera system at a fixed coastal station to take IR images of heat sources attached to the CIRPAS Twin Otter. The path dependent IR images will be taken with the Twin Otter at various altitudes and distances. Also, images and measurements should be made in different atmospheric conditions consisting of various levels of atmospheric turbulence and aerosols (onshore clean air and offshore high aerosol laden boundary layers). Observational analyses include quantifying Cn2 and aerosol profiles from the measurements and image analyses of the FLIR measurements. Meanwhile, we will use the data to evaluate diagnostic model results from the Navy Surface Layer Optical Turbulence (NSLOT) model and possibly the Navy aerosol model. All analyses will be done in conjunction with COAMPS/aerosol predicted atmospheric environment and the aerosol characteristics from the Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System (NAAPS) on a global scale. |
