Summary |
One of the critical requirements for Naval electronic intelligence and electronic support systems is to be able to accurately detect and measure low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) radar signals with a wide variety of pulse modulation parameters (variables include pulse width, type of modulation on pulse, and modulation bandwidth on pulse). Single bandwidth resolution detectors are limited in the range of pulse width / modulation that can be handled. Matched filter detectors are optimal, but given the large variety of modulations to match, are not practical in real time systems with limited computational resources. The objective of this research is to investigate multiresolution techniques with a goal of handling a broad range of radar parameters while maintaining computational efficiency. NPS brings to the table knowledge of Naval systems and the radio frequency (RF) environment from Naval platforms. L-3 specializes in the design, development, and integration of advanced avionics, special purpose airborne systems and aircraft modernization. NPS and L-3 will research multi-resolution detection techniques. This will include supporting data definition for algorithm development and test to assess the types of radar modulations, which should be examined for algorithm development and test. Furthermore, since real world environments are often much more challenging than simulated or even laboratory, the scope includes supporting evaluation of algorithms by testing on real-world data. In order to get the best in class, NPS and L-3 will collaborate on algorithm test, including developing laboratory experiments for the Nyquist Folding Receiver (NYFR) and performing field testing of the NYFR on real world signals. |
