Back Healthy Command Environments: Definitions, Risk Factors, and Protective Factors

This study will build from interviews conducted in a FY20 study on retention factors to explore the factors contributing to and detracting from a health command environment. We will conduct interviews of Sailors at all ranks to address four research questions:
(1) What is a healthy vs. unhealthy command climate (for a unit as a whole, and the collective well-being of Sailors)?
(2) How do Sailors at different parts of the command chain define a command climate to be healthy vs. unhealthy? (Is it a continuum or more categorical?) There might be substantial differences in perspectives on a healthy environment from higher-ranked vs. lower-ranked Sailors.
(3) What contributes to a healthy command climate?
(4) What are the risk factors for an unhealthy command climate?
