Back Future MVDC Power Systems: Risk Mitigation Via Load Monitoring and Fault Identification

Summary | Future Naval vessels will feature a host of new technologies for the power architecture with mission defined electronic loads such as advanced radar and pulsed-power weapons. These loads tend to have an irregular power draw and will also consume a significant amount of power. Considering the irregular nature of the mission critical loads, it is possible that the MVDC fault protection may recognize these pulsed loads as faults. Or alternatively, a fault may not be noticed as it appears similar to a pulsed load. The overall objective of the proposed work is to create a tool for distinguishing these non-traditional pulse loads from faults through the use of information gathered through command, control, computers, and communication (C4). |
