Summary The development and operational employment of non-lethal weapons (NLW) is a growing area of interest for the Department of Defense and the Marine Corps.
This work will use an MBSE approach to identify design recommendations to improve the size, weight, and power (SWAP) of a current or proposed directed energy (DE) NLW. Candidate DE systems include the active denial system and the VIPER radio frequency vessel stopper. SWAP improvements of these emerging capabilities are necessary to improve their operational suitability and better enable their integration onto various platforms. Then, using a systems of systems approach, integrate the "reduced SWAP" DE NLW along with other weapon systems into a "deny access" mission scenario in order to identify tactical and operational gaps. Recommendations will be made based on these two efforts.
This research supports the ongoing assessment, and testing and evaluation of weapon systems with the broader goals of providing warfighters with greater stand-off distance and providing additional escalation of force options while minimizing casualties and collateral damage.
This work is a collaborative effort that supports the research efforts of two faculty and two students.
