Summary The TERN is a future Navy unmanned system to be deployed on and launched from destroyers. It is capable of performing missions such as ASW, ISR, defense against small boat attacks, and acting as a communication node. Each mission has different requirements manifested in the payload on-board the TERN. There are two types of payload: fixed and changeable. The fixed payload is hard-wired into the TERN. The changeable payload space on the TERN supports a “plug-and-play” modularity, so that equipment can be swapped in and out from one operation to another. During its deployment, a TERN may be tasked with multiple missions, and thus its payload must be versatile enough to be able to handle several different functions simultaneously. Multiple possible scenarios and operational postures add another level of complexity in determining optimal payload configurations.
The overarching issue that we will address in this research is the general design of the TERN payload. This design must take into account the inherent stochasticity of the situations in which the TERN will operate. One can envision a 2D table whose dimensions are scenarios on one hand and subsets of missions on the other. Each cell in the table is associated with a fraction (probability) that represents the likelihood of this (scenario, missions) pair. Each such pair determines a set of responsive optimal payload designs, each satisfies a given MOE with a certain probability. The objective is to find a global payload design that maximizes responsiveness over all scenarios.
