Summary Literature exists for how components fail due to known failure mechanisms. The majority of this research comes from the University of Maryland's Center for Advanced Lifecycle Engineering (CALCE). This research articulates how known stressors (e.g., temperature, vibration, etc.) cause a breakdown of the component (e.g., material reduction as seen in Electromigration). Through testing, the data breakdown of the component can then be used within statistical models to predict component aging, or lifetime predictions. The limitation of this research is that it covers only specific combinations of components, stressors, failure mechanisms. Given the vast number of combinations of these three, the body of existing research is best used as a framework to understand how failure mechanisms and stressors apply to new components.

As a result, this project will be to demonstrate the three objectives. The first objective (O1) will be to summarize the vast majority of failure mechanism modeling. This will serve as a database on known models that can be leveraged for modeling the lifetime of the system. This is specifically identified to meet the sponsor's design to grow the research of this project into a larger effort. The second objective (O2) will be to model the data obtained by the NPS team to predict the lifetime of the transistor. It is anticipated that this effort might use existing models. The third objective (O3) will be to aggregate the material PoF models into a component-level PoF model.

Deliverables include one or two student theses and a summary report or publication.
