Summary	The objective is to advance understanding of the evolving requirements for U.S. extended deterrence in the 21st century, notably with regard to U.S. nuclear weapons. This includes matters such as nuclear deterrence doctrine and corresponding policy issues. These issues include the future of nuclear deterrence, conventional deterrence, and force planning, missile defense, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and developments in Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and elsewhere.
