Summary The present study proposes to define and measure gender integration in the Navy from both a quantitative and qualitative perspective. The study will focus on the Navy's officer corps. Further, since previous research shows that gender integration can vary significantly by race/ethnicity, the study will look at differences between racial/ethnic groups, including persons of Hispanic/Latino origin. The study will develop a conceptual model that can assist in interpreting the quantitative results of the study and in assessing the Navy's progress toward integration. Further, this theoretical and practical tool will include guidelines for decision makers as they measure current conditions and plan for the years ahead. The quantitative part of the study will employ two types of statistical analysis: descriptive statistics to profile the present status and performance of female and minority officers; and multivariate analyses to explain any differences in retention and performance among female and minority officers. A final report will document the results of the project. The final report will combine the qualitative and quantitative approaches and findings of the study. The final report will also include a detailed plan for continued research to define, measure, and evaluate integration of women and minorities in the Navy's officer corps.
