Summary |
The Navy can realize great savings and overhead reductions similar to the Car sharing businesses that have been successfully implemented by many universities and private companies to reduce fleet costs. Additionally, car sharing has successfully been implemented by many universities and private companies to reduced fleet costs. Since Navy Installations are considered small communities segregated into discrete administrative, industrial, operational and housing areas, implementation of a car sharing business model could produce similar benefits. Given that many Navy vehicles are only used a few hours each day, the potential for efficiencies if car sharing on a Navy Installation is determined to be feasible is high. Therefore, synchronized examination of the data produced by existing deployed telematics systems and various car sharing business models (i.e. Zipcar, car2go, Enterprise CarShare, Hertz 24/7, City Carshare, etc.). Research on this data implementing regression theory or optimization can help refine the analysis of realized benefits and lead to recommendations regarding which, if any, business models would most likely be successful in reducing fleet costs while maintaining support to mission requirements. |
