Summary | ExMCM C4I capability requirements now involve a collection of computers running various software applications for interfacing with multiple underwater vehicles, sensors, and data products. An increasing number of tasks has resulted in an unwieldy assortment of hardware and software, complicating maintenance and configuration control. Sustaining this model has become cost prohibitive. Computer Science advances in virtualization, combined with lower hardware costs (memory and CPU) have made it possible to run several instances of software applications on a single enhanced hardware set, without degrading performance. The goal of this research is to investigate solutions which combine virtualization techniques and upgraded hardware to effectively consolidate the amount of C4I systems required to conduct ExMCM missions. Performance and cost tradeoffs will be conducted to provide a recommendation for C4I requirements going forward. |
