Back Evaluation of Low Pressure Cold Spray Deposition for Repair of Corrosion Damage and Cracking in Steel Structures

This program will evaluate the potential of low-pressure cold spray deposition as a repair approach for steel structures. Low pressure (<300 psi) cold spray is more readily applied in the field and will be the focus of this program. This program will support crack repair efforts at NAVFAC Engineering Expeditionary Warfare Center.
Steel structures at naval facilities experience corrosion and cracking damage when exposed to the elements for a prolonged period of time. Repairing these structures is extremely costly, in large part, because the structures are large and cannot be easily moved to a repair facility or machine shop for repair. There are currently large. structural components overseen by NA VFAC that would benefit from cold spray deposition as an in-field repair technique, e.g. a steel dry-dock thimble in Pearl harbor. Cold spray deposition is being considered as an approach to in-field repair as it is able to deposit metal in complex geometries, thus restoring specified thickness, hermeticity, and structural integrity to the damaged component. While cold spray deposition for repair of aluminum structures is being actively investigated, the same approach for steel components has not been addressed.
