Summary The Survivability/Lethality Analysis Directorate (SLAD) of the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) is charged with analyzing the survivability, lethality, and vulnerability (SLY) of current and future battlefield systems. Increasingly, with network-enabled forces, the SLY of a system depends on the whole system-of-systems and therefore cannot be determined in isolation. Unfortunately, traditional analysis procedures, and the models used to support them, often focus on an individual system and are unable to adequately account for the effects of information flows over a common network. To address this shortcoming, SLAD, in collaboration with the Physical Science Laboratory (PSL) at New Mexico State University (NMSU), is developing the System-of-Systems Survivability Simulation (S4).
S4 has a large number of inputs with potentially intricate interactions. Furthermore, there are sources of uncertainty associated with many of these inputs. To enable 84 to reach its full potential requires that analysts be able to efficiently conduct and analyze a large number of high-dimensional experiments. Towards that end, this project will determine how best to embed 84 in an environment in that facilitates high-dimensional experimentation, The utility of embedding S4 in a data-farming environment will be assessed by a demonstration analysis on the effects of communication parameters in a scenario to be provided by PSL.
