Back Development of Shipboard Equipment Shock Survivability Assessment Technique (Continuation)

Summary So critical is this issue that the Navy has outlined shock hardening requirements for surface combatants in OPNAVINST 9072.2A. Per this instruction, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) established general guidelines for the verification, validation, and certification of surface ship shock hardness in the technical publication T9072-AF-PRO-010. It states that "equipment shall be shock qualified by test, test extension, or analysis in accordance with the following references," MIL-S-901 series, and NAVSEA 0908-LP-000-3010. While these documents establishment a method of equipment qualification, standardized criterion that constitute a survivable design, it less rigidly defined due the breadth and depth of the requirement.

This current effort continues to focus on the underlying failure modes and specific failure criteria for shipboard equipment subjected to UNDEX. In previous work the current technique has been assessed in order to investigate uncertainties in the shock level response as compared to the actual failure parameter using basic analytic approaches, finite element modeling and simulation and in-depth review of shock failure cases. Next, the identified problem parameters influencing shock response and uncertainty in failure prediction will be examined via increasingly more complex finite element models as a means of further development and verification of the recommended method. Finally, the outcome is a standardized procedure for the determination of shock related failure in equipment based on criteria derived from shock design space exploration using validated M&S models that can then be applied across various equipment and systems in the evaluation of a shock hardening.
