Back Hydrodynamically-based Detection of the Surface and Subsurface Wakes

Summary This study will continue the investigation and development of hydrodynamically-based detection methods for USW using field experiments, numerical simulations and theory. The investigation of surface and subsurface wakes for the purpose of detection is most timely since the understanding of environmental influences and numerical modeling capabilities have only recently reached the level at which all key physical components can be fully represented. Preliminary results generated by our group have been highly encouraging. Field experiments performed by the PIs and NPS thesis students in Monterey Bay resulted in a successful wake detection using temperature measurements recorded by a UUV. The identification of detection vulnerabilities will affect the tactics of undersea warfare by narrowing search areas for USW. These techniques became particularly effective in the view of continuous technological advances in remote sensing methods, which have dramatically improved the accuracy of measurements in the submarine wake. Our findings will offer valuable operational guidance in this regard. The study results will be compiled and reported in the following form: 1) Semi-annual in-progress report, 2) Final report to the sponsor, 3) Journal publication, 4) three student theses and 5) requisite NRP poster and executive summary.

The proposing team is fully qualified and has an excellent track record of attracting and supervising successful thesis projects. During the last six years, our group has produced twelve MS theses (in the USW and METOC curricula) on topics directly related to the subject of this IREF. Our research group currently includes four Navy students, three of which perform their thesis research on hydrodynamically-based detection. If the funding for this project is provided, additional students will be encouraged to pursue their thesis research on this topic.
